Featured talk: Eirik Solheim, NRK

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) is the biggest broadcaster in Norway with 16 local offices, three national TV stations, 12 national radio stations and major web sites. It’s been leading the way with a number of open video experiments, including CC licensing and BitTorrent distribution.

Eirik works in the development department of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. He is leading projects involving internet services, interactive TV, social media and broadband strategies.

Last year, Eirik blew us away with a hilarious lightning talk about YouTube and cultural difference based on his experience with NRK. This year, he’ll be expanding on those themes as one of several public media luminaries who will discuss strategies for “being the best provider of your content.”

Seminar: Open Source Developer Communities

A number of plugin/app marketplaces have emerged across the video ecosystem: LongTail AddOns, Kaltura’s App Exchange, and Brightcove Technology Partners, to name a few. In this session, join a discussion about how video companies are leveraging their communities to drive innovation and change within video platforms. Topics of discussion will include incentives for developers (money, recognition, love?), keys to building an active community, and examples of community-driven innovation.

Core conversation: News Templates for Citizen Journalists

Right now, more than 99% of the stories linked to in blogs come from legacy outlets such as newspapers and broadcast networks. And according to the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism, just four-the BBC, CNN, the New York Times and the Washington Post-account for fully 80% of all blog links.

One factor for this is surely that most citizen video reportage is unfortunately unwatchable—at best, providing raw material for old media. For open video to compete for eyeballs in the world of news reporting, it needs to increase both its production values and its story-telling for a mass audience. And these reports need to be turned around quickly and reliably by non-professionals.

In this session, learn how open source production templates can help overcome these obstacles. They cover scalable one-shot reports with a mobile phone, making news with a stills camera or with creative commons stills and an automated animation program, and short template video news.
